As a new mom and dad, you may wonder what to expect next and how to know if your baby is developing properly. Please, know that babies all develop at their own pace, there will always be variations peculiar to each child. You should also keep in mind that there is a wide window for when it is normal for a baby to reach a particular developmental stage.
Here’s what your baby may be doing during each three-month stage of the first year.
1 to 3 Months
From a month after your baby is born till about three months, there will still be jerky movement of the arms and legs, almost no neck control and they will most likely keep their hands in a fist shape while their eyes may cross from time to time.
They can probably:
1. Bring their hands near their face.
2. Focus on people's faces above other objects.
3. Fix their eyes on things 8-12 inches away.
4. Often turn head from side to side while lying on their back.
5. Turn toward sounds and voices they are familiar with like yours.
6. Smile when you talk to or smile at them.
7. React to loud noises.
8. Try to follow movement with their eyes which is called tracking.
Other things you will notice as they reach 3 months old are:
9. Trying to grab and hold onto objects.
10. Putting hand in their mouth.
11. Stretching and kicking while lying on their back.
12. Calming themselves occasionally by sucking on a hand or finger.
13. Cooing or gurgling using mostly vowel sounds.
14. Focusing on objects farther away than 12 inches.
15. Raising their head off the floor, pushing up their torso or kicking their legs while lying on their
stomach.
Remember that the average ages for reaching certain milestones are just that — average. Some babies will do things earlier, while others will do them later — and that’s all usually OKAY.
